Abstract
The effects of the dam's feeding system during suckling on the canten! of carotenoids, liposoluble vitamins (retino! and tocopherols) in the tissues (muscle, liver and fat) of light lambs were assessed. Three feeding systems during lactation were considered: ewe-lamb pairs grazed alfalfa, ewe-lamb pairs grazed sainfoin and ewe-lamb pairs were stalled and dams were fed a total mixed ration (TMR). Alter weaning (42±2 days), lambs were fed a fattening concentrate until 22-24 kg, when they were slaughtered. Carotenoids and tocopherol contents were analyzed in feedstuffs and animal tissues by UPLC analyses. Sainfoin and alfalfa had greater carotenoids and a-tocopherol contents !han TMR. The dam's feeding system affected a-tocopherol canten! in the muscle, presenting !he greatest canten! Sainfoin, intermediate Alfalfa and !he lowest TMR lambs (P<0.001). The dam's feeding system affected retino! canten! in the liver (P<0.01), presenting Sainfoin lambs greater content than Alfalfa and TMR lambs. The dam's feeding system affected retino! and atocopherol in both adipose tissues of the lamb (P<0.001 ). Sainfoin and Alfalfa lambs had greater contents than TMR lambs in both adipose tissues. In conclusion, grazing during lactation increased contents of liposoluble vitamins, but differently in the tissues of the lamb. More research is needed to propase them as biomarkers of forage feeding.
