Salmonella is recognized as a major zoonotic disease, being finishing pigs one
of the main sources of infection. Several colonies (2-12, when possible) of Salmonella spp.
isolated from mesenteric lymph nodes cultures of each finishing pig were characterized for
serotype and antimicrobial resistance (AR) against 19 agents. A total of 58 strains, belonging
to 8 serotypes of 5 serogroups, and showing 11 different patterns of multi-AR were isolated.
Most of the animals were infected simultaneously by 2 or 3 strains of Salmonella showing
different serogroup and/or AR pattern. The 95% of strains analysed were resistant to at least
one agent, showing most of them multi-AR to ACSSuT, CSSuT, CSSuT and ASSu family
agents. S. Typhimurium and S. Kapemba were the serotypes showing AR against higher
number of agents. To our knowledge, this is the first report on simultaneous infection by
different Salmonella serotype and AR pattern strains in pigs, a finding that could have
epidemiological and immunological relevance.
