Abstract
Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) is a legume used in the rotations in the dry areas of Calamocha (Teruel). Twenty two farmers were interviewed in order to know the crop management and diverse aspects of the weed flora. Farmers admit that they sow sainfoin because of its effects in decreasing weed infestations, even in the early years of subsequent crops. Although sainfoin fields host an important density of weeds during the first year, populations decrease by mowing or grazing in spring-summer, before new seed is shed. Moreover, all the interviewed farmers agreed in obtaining higher yields of the cereal sown after sainfoin, wich is usually barley. Thus, this crop is considered to be a viable alternative to fallow in rotations on fresh drylands, delivering additional benefits.
