Native wild brown trout populations from several rivers in Aragon (Spain) have been selected for artificial stocking in hatcheries. These genetically pure populations were introduced in a hatchery in Planduviar (Huesca), in which exhaustive monitoring of adaptation was performed. These native trouts died immediately after reproduction. The subsequent derived native generations showed high mortality rates, most dying before 3 years, and never reaching five years of age. The high mortality was mostly associated to stress derived handling during breeding season. In addition to the potential loss of essential adaptative genes, these results seriously question the interest of maintaining native brown trout lines for artificial stockinges_ES
